A Donor Appreciation Event
As a sincere thank you to those who faithfully support the CWM’s programs, our new president, Tim Rice, will host several instances of a special donor appreciation program for Center for World Music invited guests in October and November of 2017. Donors are invited to attend one of the following sessions:
Tuesday, October 24, 7-9 pm
Thursday, November 2, 7-9 pm
They will be held in the Parkview Room of the Del Prado, a condominium high-rise building at 666 Upas Street on the northwest corner of Balboa Park. Free on-street parking is readily available on Upas Street in front of the building and on Balboa Drive just a few feet south of Upas.
7:30 pm Magical Mystery Tour of the World’s Music
Each instance will begin at 7:00 pm with a get-to-know-you, wine-and-cheese reception and continue at 7:30 pm. This will be followed by an informal, illustrated talk titled the “Magical Mystery Tour of the World’s Music.” The presentation will be rooted in the knowledge recorded in the Garland Encyclopedia of World Music, a ten-volume collection Dr. Rice edited a few years ago, each volume dedicated to the music of a region of the world: the Pacific, East Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Latin America, and other regions.
Attendees will take an imaginary trip around the world, stopping in each of these regions to listen to one video performance of music and to reflect on the way people use music to express their world view and their aesthetic and ethical values and inject emotion and meaning into their social, political, and economic life. Fifty minutes will fly by as you learn a fascinating and entertaining lesson about why music is so important to human beings everywhere in the world.
If you would like to receive an invitation to this and future donor appreciation events, please consider becoming a supporter. If you have questions about this event please contact Monica Emery.
