Raga, Roots & Re-imaginings

Sunday, March 4, 2018 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

- $20
Sheela Bringi

Raga, Roots & Re-imaginings is the second of five concerts in the Center for World Music’s Passport to Worlds of Music Spring Series 2018.

Sheela Bringi with Clinton Patterson, Miles Shrewsbery and Brent Kuecker

An evening of spiritually elevating music from Hindustani harpist, singer, and bansuri flutist Sheela Bringi. Sheela will present beautiful re-imaginings of traditional Indian classical, devotional, and folk songs, interspersed with tales of love and lore from the velvet-voiced trumpeter Clinton Patterson. They will be joined by San Diego tabla artist Miles Shrewsbery and bassist Brent Kuecker.

Come and experience the mysticism of India’s classical music and bhakti traditions—with their powerfully moving spirituality of bhajan and kirtan—infused with the soulfulness of American roots music. Not to be missed!

Press Highlights

Indian music expands to accommodate the spirit and whatever human circumstances enclose it: Hip-hop, Balkan music and the blues all meld within grooves that only gain intensity from the reformulations Bringi and her collaborators explore.
– National Public Radio

Sheela’s classically trained voice and slightly avant-garde energy create magic.
Chicago Yoga

Her music features devotional songs and tributes to fierce warrior Hindu goddesses with a focus on the mystical.
