Odissi Dancers

Odissi Dance School October Student Recital

Join us for the Monthly Dance Recital of the Center for World Music Odissi Dance School.

Each month the school hosts a performance in which students present dance compositions that they have mastered under the instruction of our master teacher from India, Sri Rudraprasad Swain of the Orissa Dance Academy.

This month’s performance features dancers Maya Janaswamy, Sejal Janaswamy, Shweta Shetty, and Madhavi Kutty.

If you would like to learn about Odissi and meet the students and teachers of our school, this is a great opportunity. The event is free and open to the public.

Rudraprasad Swain Performs Odissi at Youth Festival 2017

Sri Rudraprasad Swain, master-teacher at the Center for World Music’s Odissi Dance School, will perform at the second annual Youth Festival of Music and Dance, organized by the Indian Fine Arts Academy of San Diego.

Rudraprasad began his studies of Odissi dance at a tender age of five. At age fifteen he joined the Orissa Dance Academy in Bhubaneswar and trained under legendary Guru Gangadhar Pradhan. He was further refined into a versatile and dynamic dancer under Guru Smt. Aruna Mohanty. He has participated in prestigious programs around the world, in Thailand, Germany, Europe, and United States, his most memorable performance the International Odissi Festival. He is the recipient of the Senior National Scholarship from the Ministry of Culture and Debaprasad Das Smrut Sanman Award.

The Youth Festival of Music and Dance seeks to provide a platform for some of the best young talent from North Americ. This year’s festival will include both classical music and dance from North and South India.

You are warmly invited to join the Center for World Music’s Odissi Dance School for its spring recital.

The program will be directed by Sri Rajesh Kumar Palai, visiting teacher from the Orissa Dance Academy, Bhubaneswar, India. Students will demonstrate their knowledge and skill through performance of various items.

This event is free and open to the public. It will provide an opportunity for anyone interested in learning about Indian classical dance to meet members of our school and learn about Odissi.

Odissi Dance School Fall Recital

You are warmly invited to join us for the Center for World Music Odissi Dance School’s Fall 2018 recital.

The program will be directed by Sri Rajesh Kumar Palai, visiting teacher from the Orissa Dance Academy, Bhubaneswar, India. Students will demonstrate their knowledge and skill through performance of various items.

This event is free and open to the public. It will provide an opportunity for anyone interested in learning about Indian classical dance to meet members of our school and learn about Odissi.

Odissi Dance School India Cyclone Benefit Concert

Celebrate Odissi Dance and Help Cyclone Victims

Rudraprasad Swain and two additional internationally recognized dancers and dance teachers, Shalini and Shibani Patnaik, will be special guest artists at the Annual Program of the CWM Odissi Dance School on May 25.

In support of the victims of Cyclone Fani, which severely battered northeastern India and Bangladesh, this event will be a benefit concert. The damage from the cyclone has been especially catastrophic in the state of Odisha, the home of Odissi.

The recital will feature performances from all students. Students will present items they have studied at the school under the guidance of the Odissi Dance School’s resident dance master, Rudraprasad Swain, who will direct the program.

Admission is free, but donations for cyclone victims will be gratefully accepted.
