This 50-minute live-hosted music and discussion event will explore the human experience as expressed through three styles of Mexican regional music. Hermanos Herrera, along with Dr. Rice, will explore the lived meanings of son jarocho, son huasteco, and accordion-based norteño music, from northern Mexico.
In this event, composer and multi-instrumentalist Vân-Ánh Võ reflects on her innovative take on traditional Vietnamese music. She presents a daring work for đàn bầu monochord and voice that takes inspiration from poetry by eighteen-century poet Hồ Xuân Hương.
Interspersed between curated recorded performances, setar player Kourosh Taghavi and ethnomusicologist Solmaz Shakerifard will discuss the historical and contemporary context of Iranian classical music within the Persianate world.
