The Del Mar Library is celebrating 30 years and has invited the Center for World Music to bring music to the festivities. Enjoy a free concert of music from Zimbabwe and Bali and try your hand at playing instruments from around the world with our Musical Instrument Petting Zoo.
11:00 – 11:45: Mbira performance with Garit Imhoff. Following the presentation, audience members will be invited to learn a song on mbira, the Zimbabwean “thumb piano,” played by plucking metal tines with one’s fingers.
12:00 – 12:45: “Wayang Kulit” performance with the Jangkrik Punyah ensemble featuring Geoff Dent. Wayang Kulit features beautiful interlocking melodies played on Balinese gamelan instruments with bronze keys over bamboo resonators.
11:00 – 1:00: Musical Instrument Petting Zoo—a hands-on experience for musicians of all ages.
Garit Imhoff is a professional mbira player, teacher, and performer, specializing in storytelling and movement. He has studied and performed traditional Zimbabwean music extensively and taught for many years with World Music in the Schools.
Gamelan Jangkrik Punyah is an ensemble dedicated to the mesmerizing and intricate sounds of traditional Balinese music. With a deep reverence for the island’s rich cultural heritage, the group specializes in the vibrant and hypnotic rhythms of gamelan, a percussion-based orchestra that forms the heart of Balinese music.
