Dlan Dary is a gifted young multi-instrumentalist and singer who was born in Al-Hasakah, Syria. Although Dlan is blind, he was recognized for his talent on the buzuq, a long-necked fretted lute, and made his first appearance on national TV at age 6.
In November of 2016, Dlan’s family fled Syria and sought refuge in the United States, where he continues to expand his mastery of music, attends school, and prepares to pursue a career as a professional musician. Largely self-taught, Dlan plays more than eight instruments—including the buzuq, bağlama, oud, darbuka, and tanbūra. He also sings in Kurdish, Arabic, and English.
“Music is my life, it makes me very happy and I have nothing except music to express my feelings. It is through music that I get introduced to many people, so music helped me in many ways,” Dlan told SBS Kurdish in a 2019 interview about his life as a refugee.
